With Web TV What’s the Point of Cable?
although i would say that the comments from the twitterverse weren't COMPLETELY surprising, i am trying to keep it in perspective.
just as we (read: black folks) don't like having a few ignorant negroes (read: soulja boy, t-pain) represent all of us, a relatively few non-black people complaining about trending topics shouldn't push us to make the conclusion that the entire community is racist.
whats lost in this little story is the reason why them cats were top trending topics: hella #blck folks were airing their grievances of just how effing embarrassing that shite was last night....
I was made part of this "list" when I made a tweet about the trending topics. All the personalities that were on the topics were musicians, which I'm not a fan of. I did not even make it in any way, shape or form, made to be twisted around for everyone to interpret it as racist. What the twitterers said that we're featured on this entry, is very wrong and is not a joking matter. I am appalled that I was on this list, and how much hate I got for it. It doesn't matter whether you're white, black, asian, hispanic, or whatever, I'm just not a fan of the type of MUSIC. I found this so wrong because this is MY twitter account, where I should be able to voice MY opinions, what I'm doing, and how I feel. I am SO against racism, I'm asian...you don't think I never get that? But with all the hate mail I'm getting, I'm beginning to think this is a joke. And with reply to the person above me...it seems like omgblackepeople wasn't trying to "shed light" on racist twits, I think someone got bored and wanted to put some of us through hell....thanks.
Go ahead, follow me, give me more crap for being a human being with HUMAN OPINIONS.
The "I'm Asian" I can't be racist bull doesn't work here. Are you familiar with Kenneth Eng, Mr. "I Hate Black People"? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TK4fjMhGn-I
You are free to express your opinion. When you post that opinion on a public forum, such as twitter, you shouldn't be shocked when there is a response, especially when you made a racist tweet. So when you tweet your opinion, folks have the right to respond. Keep your racism private, no one will say anything.
Revisiting the genius of Michael Jackson en requiem made me realize how far we came with him and how much we have regressed. Lord help us all.
Angela, amazing observations and an amazing report. I follow some well known "social media experts" and they were not at all pleased with Twitters trending topics. These are the same people who touted the use of Twitter as a great social networking tool. Did they mean it was only great within their ranks or circles? I get that impression. Those trending topics hold a wealth of qualitative information in regard to what interests users-all users, if only the experts "listened" to the messages the trends reveal. In fact, @brighteyesjulie found an interesting use of those trends: Web property valuation. Wow!
Thank you for bringing attention to this issue. I am actually one of the people featured on the website, along with my tweet about trending topics.
I was verbally attacked after the BET show, even though my tweet was made just before or right when the show started.
My tweet had absolutely NOTHING to do with The BET topics showing up on my screen. Everyone who attacked me had never followed me before so they would have no prior knowledge that I complain about trending topics on an almost daily basis. I complain about #3hotwords #badpubnames etc, and so forth.
Looking back at the wording, it is easy to understand how my tweet could be misinterpreted. It was however, taken out of complete context and conveniently posted without a time stamp on it, so it could be used to send poison darts my way. What I find most disheartening is the fact that obvious attempts were made by certain people to "find" questionable tweets so that a barage of hate could be fired upon all "guilty" parties after the show.
I was called some disgusting names, and although not threatened, I did notice other people being threatened with tweets that read "you better lock your doors and windows tonight" One of my friends who was defending me, was called a fag. Which is not true, but also a derogatory and discriminatory name. It doesn't make sense to me.
So, while I am sorry that my comment was misinterpreted, and admittedly poorly timed, I cannot apologize for the misunderstanding that was caused.
I did read some of the blatantly racist comments made ( ie. "this isn't a very good neighbourhood") and was appalled, so I can understand why there was so much anger last night.
I only hope that in the future, people remember that 2 wrongs don't make a right.
How would you like to get SUED for DEFAMATION?
@brighteyesjulie is a funny girl. I’ve been reading her stuff for a while now, and she’s got some real gems. A few days ago she posted the above.
She was promptly attacked, defamed, and covered in vitriol. At the low point, she was referred to as a “wack bish”; and I found the entire exchange hilarious. But it got me thinking. @brighteyesjulie, unbeknownst to her, became a shining example of double standard over night. She was like a proverbial Don Imus, except sexy and relevant.
I was okay with watching this from afar for a while, as a novelty. But now it’s affecting my funny. You see, nearly her entire stream is now dedicated to fending off attacks that she’s a racist, limiting my joke intake. That’s no good for anybody. @brighteyesjulie isn’t racist. Nor is she ignorant.
Contrary to popular belief, white people can make facetious or satirical jokes without being ignorant racists. This is one such case. And the racist accusations constantly thrown around at trivial things only cheapens said accusations when they really deserved to be made.
So leave the poor girl alone and let her go back to making us laugh.

I think some of you guys are being unfair to the younger people and their taste in music. The older people trashed our hip-hop 20 years ago, remember? Now we do that to the young people because they like lame-ass Soulja Boy. LOL! It seems unfair.
What would people have rather seen on the BET awards? I haven't watched them in years--2009 was the first time I watched in a long time so I dont have any other references to go by. What do people think would have improved the award show? Not being facetious, I really want to know because I'm not really into popular music anymore. What would have made the show better?
I am 65 and African American.
BET with just a very few exceptions is and has been Plantation Television for a long time even under cheap-ass Robert Johnson.
It fails to properly present a cross section of Black people, plain and simple, sorry to say.
Jack Brodnax San Francisco Bay
Jamie Foxx has made millions off of white folks so I doubt he hates them. Just because he has, though, doesn't make him have to kiss ya'll ass. Miley Cyrus may be a bitch as far as he is concerned. He more than likely has met her, as you most likely have not, and came to his decision.
The poor white people of the world a victims of reverse discrimination is a joke that Blacks see right through. Sorry, just like Jamie Foxx, most of us just don't give a #$%^!!!
Lesson Learned huh!
On another note your comment about "serving their market." also seems to denote that mainstream media does not follow the achievements of black executives because it is not in their market? Really? A quick scan through any major news site will show they all exist and I am sure none of them would like the lessening of their achievements you offer them through the suggestion they could only be found here.
It is amazing that in a country so integrated with race and religion we would need an outlet for any one group of people to shine when as we all know great people of any color and any religion will shine regardless of publication or forum.
And here is that "missing" comment:
