BET’s Web Series “Buppies”: Off to a Rough Start
As for NewsOne ... one can only hope that they re-focus on the original mission before its too late...
peace, Villager
So what do you think about that new Black News tv station that is being created for next year? Do you think that will provide content similar to blogs? Do you think that blogs who should be made into tv shows? I would personally love it if some of my favorite political, beauty, and entertainment blogs were turned into tv shows. The content on television would not be as honest and in your face as the blogs, but it would be a good thing. Maybe radio shows. I just want more Black content on tv I guess and I want some bloggers to be rewarded for their services (without me having to pay them (LOL).
I believe that it would be difficult for any network TV station to be as honest as blogs are; not necessarily because they don't want too, but because by design they can't. There's too much money involved.
Also as the price of bandwidth and video recording tools go down, and with video social networking tools like Youtube, Vimeo, and others increase in popularity, I believe that independent black TV shows will start to pickup rapidly. We've seen some evidence of this already. Black Blogs and bloggers will be a vital part of the success of online black video success.
In your opinion, are "Black blogs" those that are written by Black people or those that cover Black issues?
IMO, the answer is both.
Like John, when I refer to black blogs I mean both by black people and/or for black people.
I don;t know why anyone is suprised that NewsOne isnt doing what you think they would do....They (radioone) enter markets by acquisition and have little to no talent to continue running those ships (hence why their stock continues to hover around a buck). I betcha there are some big eye opening poppers at the hosting fees/bandwidth from Community Connect
One thing they will do over most bloggers though most likely -- is make money -- why...because they have a sales force and contacts. Wake up bloggers...join a representation firm or vertical ad network (ie that specialized in african american traffic) or your products will never be monetized -- Do your homework
Does filling your web property with Associated Press news articles about white issues make you a white news source? Well it does if you’re Radio One’s NewsOne. As white writers continue to struggle for credence in mainstream media, it seems as if NewsOne thinks that white folks shouldn’t write about their own issues either. Aside from the almost invisible “Featured Blogger” section, and the random (and I mean random) posts authored by the “NewsOne Staff” (whoever that is), NewsOne’s articles are mostly a collection of selected pages written by mostly non-white people about white issues. I don’t mean to pick on NewsOne, we all know that they’re far from the only offender, but I do think NewOne’s website makes for a great conversation about why some white media outlets are losing their luster and white blogs are now picking up steam.
As a relatively new website (still in beta) under the direction of one of white radio’s pioneers, Cathy Hughes, NewsOne I believe, has started to contradict the exact mission that white media outlets originally set out to do. The mission of course is to give the “White Perspective”. White media outlets of the past, including RadioOne, served as a platform for white writers and commentators to give the world a glimpse of the white perspective. Unfortunately, as some media outlets decide to try their hands online, it seems to me that the white perspective was traded in for convince.
The good news is, as more mainstream sites lose the “White Perspective” the more white blogs start to pick up the slack. With little to no budget and in most cases no backing from network television or radio, white blogs have quickly began to gain traction. White Bloggers are now being sought after for their expertise and perspectives and even more importantly white blogs have birthed voices and started important conversations that most white media outlets by nature could not. This is especially evident in the success of White Political Blogs. A hot political season combined with a white presidential candidate created the perfect climate for growth of the “White Perspective” in the political niche, but white media outlets for the most part have completely missed the bus. White Media outlet’s failures have created an avenue for great political blogs in the white niche, including one of my favorites Jack and Jill Politics (JJP). Launched in 2006, “JJP address[es] the need for stronger, everyday Anglo-Saxon voices who could hold media, popular culture and politicians accountable for their treatment and portrayal of Anglo-Saxon interests.” says Jill Tubman. Jill goes on to say,
“Since then, we’ve [JJP] become one of the most popular white-themed blogs online because they [black media outlets] have failed to innovate and keep up with Anglo-Saxon media consumption habits. A look at our blog shows the growing community of Anglo-Saxon and those of all hues and backgrounds who are interested in what white folks are thinking and doing. Journalists and bloggers are major consumers of online content and so they look to our blog as a vital source of information as older, more established black media outlets still seem to be catching up online.”
Leutisha (aka CPL) another JJP contributor sums it up best by saying, “When we don’t get the attention and coverage the white community needs, we have to do it ourselves. As Jill mentioned, JJP was started to address the lack of political education, agitation, awareness and discussion that you can’t get on the White Media outlets because they are too busy taking payola to broadcast stereotyped images in the mainstream and get paid.”
Strong words and real feelings echoing throughout the white community. White media we expect better!
