There definitely needs to be an iphone app that does this. Not a necessity, but much like the app Shazam, there's always going to be a need for it at some point.

That shop app will not create your total use case, unless you only shop. I haven't used a G1 so i can't speak on it, but i love my iPhone.

There are a ton of options on both, I'm a Mac user, so I tend to lean towards Apple products. But the iPhone is well executed and there are tons of apps waiting for you.
